Region: Orkney
This aerial photograph was taken by the Royal Air Force in 1942 and shows the initial construction phase of the Churchill Barrier No 1. To the west is the earlier line of blockships, Kirk Sound, where U47 penetrated the Scapa Flow defences to sink HMS Royal Oak in 1939.
