I often walk the dogs around the wheel area, The views to the north and east on a clear day from the top of the wheel are well worth checking out.

I had the pleasure of visiting the wheel with other members of The Ripon Motor Boat Club. It is not only a fascinating piece of engineering but a delight to experience a ride on board one of the tourist crafts. I would recommend it as a day out to anyone, boaters or not, as a unique experience.

What a wonderful device! Absolutely daft and almost reminiscent of Heath Robinson, but an extremely pleasing and exciting contraption - it reminds one of the best of Victorian engineering and is very pretty to look at. Congratulations to Scotland for building it!

I too have loved using this fantastic piece of technology !!!!(although I would like to add that the Millennium Dome is not English - its British, and no English person I've ever met would prefer it over the wheel!)

This view of the Falkirk Wheel says just what I feel about it. I've visited it umpteen times - just about every visitor who stays with us gets shown it unless they have a really good excuse - and it thrills me every time. The best way to see it is to come along the canal from Edinburgh: you emerge from the darkness of that slightly scary tunnel and suddenly find yourself about to launch into the void. (It reminded me very much of the gestalt shift I once got on emerging from Venice Railway Station and seeing the canal instead of a street.) Then you can scramble down the bank and see how the marvellous thing actually works. I always feel quietly smug when I compare Scotland's Millennium Link (the canal path and wheel) with England's offering: the Millennium Dome.

The Falkirk Wheel has already become an instantly recognisable Scottish icon. As well as demonstrating Scottish engineering achievements, it is also a tourist attraction in its own right - is this the Forth Bridge of the 21st century? I cycled there along the Union Canal from the centre of Edinburgh last year, 34 miles in total, and the Falkirk Wheel was a very welcome sight!

Being a girl, I wasn't that bothered at the visit to the Wheel planned by my son in Glasgow but from the moment we walked up the slope and saw it I was enthralled. it is a huge sculpture rising from the water, it's movement quiet and graceful, a beautiful object and easy to understand!
