As a kid I dreamed of going to Glasgow Art School and for four years I was exactly where I felt I belonged- in the atmospheric labyrinths of the MacIntosh building. Down in the basement cinema I saw my first movies by Kurasawa, Bergman, Felini, De Sica, Pasolini and that's where my love affair with cinema began, the first step towards making my own movies. Whoever chose these wonderful movies for the film society, I'd like to buy that man a drink!

As a graduate I treasure my years spent at GSA in the 1970s & have been fortunate to witness our son graduating from the same course 30 years later. It has been reassuring but unsurprising to re-visit the Mackintosh building & discover that little has changed. Surely testiment to successful, functional, inspiring design ! The Mac is a feast for the senses. Visually little has changed & the aroma of dark wood & oil paint assails the nostrils as you enter through the familiar heavy clump-swish of the main doors.
I spent 1st year in a top floor studio & was pleased to spend subsequent years in the Newbery Tower. That meant that you had a great view of this fine building & also meant that you didn't have to look at the concrete Newbery Tower !

Without question, the country's most magical and inspiring teaching environment of the 20th Century.

This is possibly one of the most fascinating buildings I have ever known. Not only is it an amazing piece of architecture but it remains a beacon to all who have studied within its walls.

I always knew, from early childhood, that I would study at the Art School. My first acquaintance was through the Saturday morning painting and sculpture classes for kids; although my school qualifiations fell far short of the absolute minimum, my portfolio got me in. It leaves its mark on you, in many ways. The building itself, which has an overbearing vertical and gothic ambience, in contrast to the openness of the studios; and the (long-gone) pine-scented stairwash - also the multicoloured sunsets, uniquely viewed from the hen-run, through the murk of old, industrial, smoky Glasgow. We all left part of ourselves in those walls!

What an amazing building! To think that MacIntosh not only was the architect but paid attention to even the smallest detail be it a tile on the wall or the decorative iron work on the exterior. I was priviledged to study and graduate from the Glasgow School of Art in 1969 (before the tremendous popularity afforded almost all things CRM) and have carried the love of it for almost forty years. There was a magical feeling going through the swing doors on Renfrew Street and seeing the light and space opening before as you approached the stairs leading to the amazing expanse of the Museum, with it's glass roof. It has been a major influence in my life. I never miss an opportunity to visit on my annual visits to Scotland.

An amazing building that continues to inspire today. It must have been a wonderful sight when it was completed nearly one hundred years ago. Mackintosh's architectural influence extends way beyond his relatively small output and teaches us that we should be prepared to look to the new, with references to our historical buildings but not getting trapped into mock buildings.

I made a special segway to see this Mackintosh building in 2004 & the airport cab driver kept going on & on about how I should visit the Tenement Museum while I was practically hanging out of the window in awe of the Glasgow School of Art of which I took 50 pictures. The huge northern exposure windows! The granite! The library windows! The ironwork! The way the building sits on Renfrew!

I was very lucky to have the chance to study at Glasgow School of Art. When I arrived I did not know what great architecture was, but by the end of my four years I knew! Its influence on me was literally life changing. I had gone there to study sculpture but came away wanting to construct much larger objects- buildings. It took me another ten years but I eventually qualified as an architect and my memories of this marvellous building will always remain clear. I remember running up the stone steps under the specially designed clock over the entrance into the reception hall. It was a dark space with glittering mosaic portraits of past artists greeting me as I climbed the stairs wrapped around the porter's office into the large flood-lit space of the museum where we hung our temporary exhibitions beneath its elegantly crafted wooden roof structure. I remember the smaller details of the building from the delicately coloured stained glass panels in the doors to the elegant and practical easels in the studios. I remember the specially designed window seats where I used to sit with my friends and discuss our days and nights. I have to stop there as my memories are endless! I don't know any other building with so much to offer.
