No other site in Scotland conveys the sheer power and scale of the Roman military machine in the way that Ardoch does. The austere regularity and precision of the defences seem completely alien in the landscape of Perthshire.
It's a powerful place to visit, as you feel a level of sympathy for the indigenous people in the face of such organisation and power, but also for the Roman soldiers who, to all intents and purposes, had literally been sent to the end of the earth.

Ardoch is the iconic Roman fort in Scotland, with its seemingly endless ditches and ramparts evidencing successive phases of use by the Roman army. I have visited it on numerous occasions and have never failed to be impressed by the sheer size and scale of its defences. It always rather bizarrely feels like a peaceful place in the Perthshire countryside, which belies its original function as a home for hundreds of soldiers attempting to conquer and occupy this part of Scotland.
